Yes, laying in the sun is damaging for your skin. We all know that, but we do it anyway. Who doesn’t love a nice sun tan while you’re vacationing?! I know I do and I am guilty of not nourishing my skin enough afterwards. It is just as important to care for your skin before hitting the beach as it is after. I wanted to share with you three do’s and don’t’s of after-sun skincare.
- HYDRATE: The sun is extremely dehydrating and it is very important to drink water not only to replenish the insides of your body, but also to replenish your skin.
- Take a Cool Shower: Salt water and chlorine are both very drying on the skin and can magnify sun damage, it’s important to reverse the effects by cooling your body/skin off plus washing your body with an alcohol-free soap. Products containing alcohol do more harm than good in the long run and are known to be very drying.
- Moisturize: It is also very important to moisturize your skin after sun exposure in order to restore vitamins and minerals that the sun may have depleted you of. My favorite is by Kayo. - If you get sunburnt, do not repeat your mistakes. Long term damage can be done by exposing already burnt skin to the sun again. Your best bet is to completely cover up, not with sunscreen, but with clothing articles.
- Tons of drug stores sell aloe vera which is what we immediately think about when we get a sunburn. When you reach for that aloe, before you put it all over you, make sure there is no alcohol in it. The alcohol can cause you to get extremely itchy and dry out your skin even more. Your best bet is aloe vera in it’s purest gel form.
- If you are peeling from a sunburn, do not pick at your skin in efforts to speed up the process. This will only harm your skin in the long run. Instead, take vitamin C to replenish your skin and if you are itching, an ice cube will be your new BFF!
